Population structure and capsular switching of invasive Neisseria meningitidis isolates in the pre-meningococcal conjugate vaccine era--United States, 2000-2005.
BACKGROUND A quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) was licensed in the United States in 2005; no serogroup B vaccine is available. Neisseria meningitidis changes its capsular phenotype through capsular switching, which has implications for vaccines that do not protect against all serogroups. METHODS Meningococcal isolates from 10 Active Bacterial Core surveillance sites from 200...
متن کاملMolecular discrimination between Neisseria meningitidis serogroups W-135 and Y based on the nucleotide recognition domain sequence of the capsule polymerases.
Pathogenic Neisseria meningitidis isolates in most cases express one of five capsular polysaccharide-defined serogroups, i.e., A, B, C, W-135, and Y. The capsular polysaccharides of serogroups W-135 and Y are composed of repetitive disaccharide units of sialic acid linked to galactose and glucose, respectively (1). The capsule polymerases and the encoding genes synF and synG (also referred to a...
متن کاملPhysicochemical properties of Neisseria meningitidis group X polysaccharide antigen.
Neisseria meningitidis group X occurs in human carrier populations and is rarely implicated in serious disease. This organism possesses a capsular group antigen which is an acidic polysaccharide. It is composed of the amino sugars, glucosamine, glucosamine-6-phosphate, galactosamine, and the simple hexose, glucose. The group X capsular antigen has an S(20,w) (0) of 3.6, and the acidic nature of...
متن کاملCapsular Switching in Invasive Neisseria meningitidis, Brazil1
During the 1990s, an epidemic of B:4 Neisseria meningitidis infections affected Brazil. Subsequent increase in C:4 disease suggested B → C capsular switching. This study identified B → C switches within the sequence type 32 complex. Substantial disease related to capsular switching emphasizes the need for surveillance of circulating meningococcal strains to optimize disease control.
متن کاملThe Development of an Experimental Multiple Serogroups Vaccine for Neisseria meningitidis
A native outer membrane vesicles (NOMV) vaccine was developed from three antigenically diverse strains of Neisseria meningitidis that express the L1,8, L2, and L3,7 lipooligosaccharide (LOS) immunotypes, and whose synX, and lpxL1 genes were deleted.. Immunogenicity studies in mice showed that the vaccine induced bactericidal antibody against serogroups B, C, W, Y and X N. meningitidis strains. ...
